How to Trim Guinea Pig Nails

To properly trim a guinea pig's nails, you'll need a pair of sharp, small clippers specifically designed for trimming pet nails. If you have a particularly skittish guinea pig, you may also want to have someone help you hold the pet still during the trimming process.

Start by gently picking up your guinea pig and cradling it in your arms. Hold one of its paws and gently spread the toes so you can see the nails. Locate the quick, which is the pink part of the nail that contains the blood vessels and nerves. Trim just the tips of the nails, taking care not to cut into the quick. If you do accidentally cut into the quick, apply a small amount of styptic powder to the nail to help stop the bleeding. Repeat the process with each nail, taking breaks if your guinea pig becomes agitated or upset.
